When alarmed, these birds flutter frantically and utter alarm calls. Cardinals usually nest in dense shrubs or thickets around the edges of open land so leaving these areas in your yard to grow is advisable if you want to. The breeding season begins in March and continues to September. This extra layer of feathers protects the cardinals from extreme cold. Northern cardinals are socially monogamous, though polygyny occasionally occurs. Molting is when the bird develops an extra layer of feathers that insulates the bird’s body and helps them keep themselves warm during the winter season. ![]() ![]() Those from the east molt before migration travel straight to their wintering habitat in southern Florida, Cuba, and the Bahamas. Cardinals and other birds that do not migrate, usually molt in the late summers. The populations from the west undergo a molt in northern Mexico and southern Arizona (between their breeding and wintering habitats) before arriving at the wintering grounds in the south, in Mexico and Central America. Mother Cardinals have the most difficult easy job imaginable: not only to feed her babies but to be alert every moment. Fall migration starts at the end of July and runs to mid-October, with the spring returning from early April until mid-May. The cardinals’ range has been increasing rapidly along the northern regions of the United States. These birds are likely to stay in the same region throughout their range, even during the winter months. Painted buntings are nocturnal migrants, and migrate over short to medium distances. Cardinals are permanent residents, meaning that they never migrate to other areas. They also engage in visual displays including flying bouncingly like a butterfly or in an upright display, body-fluff display, bow display, and wing-quiver display. They also will go after bugs to feed their nestlings. For much of the year, 75 percent of the food that northern cardinals eat is plant material, but at the height of summer breeding season, cardinals supplement their diet with insects. The male behaves territorially, marking out his territory with song. The males are frequently heard singing songs that may last 30 seconds or more, being a means of self-advertisement and/or territorial defense during the breeding season when they become highly territorial.
